Technician Tips to consider:

1. Why are the yellow and green lights on? (2008 and newer Generac) What should I do? The yellow light means that there is a recommended service due for your generator. If you open your generator top cover and look at the display it should tell you what the reminder is for. These are reminders come on after a set period of time; they are not triggered by a fault or an actual condition of the generator. Rest assured that if the green light is on, the generator will operate correctly in the event of a power outage. The yellow light can be reset following the procedure below, but it will not hurt anything to leave it until we come out to do the annual service. 
2. My red indicator light is on and I haven’t heard the generator try and start on exercise. What can I do? The Generac generators have a shutdown mode when the generator detects a fault that would do major harm to the generator or to your power. The generator then shuts down and will not start until the fault is cleared. Sometimes the fault is intermittent. It can be cleared and the generator will operate fine. Extreme cold weather is one example of this, the generator goes through several cycles of cranking and then resting until it faults out. However, in the extreme cold, it may need just one more crank cycle to start the unit. (The cold weather kit would also take care of this problem!) By resetting the generator, you may get it to start and run fine. It’s always good to try and reset it. 
3. How to reset the generator: Pre-2008 machines, tan paint with square corners: Once you open the top cover, you will see one of the red lights on. Write down what fault it is, move the main rocker switch to the off, or center position, and then push it to manual. If the generator starts and runs OK for several minutes, push it back to off and back into auto and you should be ready for proper operation. If it stops again, call us! 309-676-58558888888

2008 and later machines, beige/gray paint with rounded corners: Open the top cover. Sometimes it helps to push down on the cover right above the lock area to make it easier to turn the key. The key slot needs to be vertical to be unlocked. Push the main switch to the middle or the off position (or push the off button on newer models) and then push the enter button. This will clear the fault code and the display should read switched to off. Try and start it by pushing the switch (or button on newer models) to the manual position, it should crank, start and run. If it stays running you’re OK. Push the switch (or button) to the off position and then put it (or push it) into the auto position. The green light should come on and the display should say ready to run. If it shuts down by itself again with a warning message, call us! 

1. Briggs generators: Push the off button or return the rocker switch to the off position. This should reset the fault, then press the manual button or push the rocker switch to the manual position. The generator should try and start and run. If it does, go back to off and then auto. Keep an eye on it and let us know if it faults out again!
